Despite the rising popularity of Service Meshes, achieving widespread adoption for existing services can be a challenging endeavor. Complexity remains a significant hurdle, as does the integration with existing systems. Engineers are also hesitant to embrace this architectural shift, especially when they perceive that the benefits are already present in their current applications. Our journey commenced after a significant site-wide outage back in 2021 and has since transformed into a critical system managing 5 million RPS and 10K pods. We will share the best practices that facilitated our successful adoption, requiring minimal engineering effort. We will discover how we orchestrated the evolution of our architecture to align with organizational priorities to solve real world problems in scalability, reliability, efficiency, and velocity. In addition, we will also share the challenges we encountered, mistakes we made, lessons we learned along the way.
